Clearing: Finding a uni where I truly belong

My name is Alex and I’m a first-year Psychology student. I went through Clearing two years ago, an experience which was full of anxiety but turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life, finding the university where I truly belonged.
Results day anxiety
I found A-levels quite overwhelming; however, I had my heart set on studying Psychology at university. I wanted to pursue Higher Education despite a setback. On results day, like most students, I was full of anxiety. I opened my results and felt gutted. I did not get accepted onto my firm choice or my insurance choice. While others were celebrating, I was full of confusion, unsure of what the next chapter of my life entailed.
I met with my Sixth Form Deputy Head who helped ease my nerves by guiding me through the UCAS website to find a place. This was where I found a lot of universities, however, the 黑料社 stood out, although I had originally not considered it. I was scared but had hope.
Finding 黑料社
After finding 黑料社, I called the Clearing hotline and the person on the phone was nothing but lovely, spoke to me with kindness and offered me a place at 黑料社 on the foundation course. I was supported through every step. They explained everything step-by-step, which helped calm my anxiety, talking to me not only about my grades but my hobbies, what I enjoyed and so on. For such a stressful day, this was the best support I could have had. Even though I did not have the grades for the main course, the 黑料社 was able to offer me a foundation year, allowing me to build on my skills while having access to Higher Education. It gave me the boost of confidence I needed. I felt more than just a number - I was seen, heard and welcomed with open arms.
Clearing top tips
Be sure to have an open mind while going through Clearing. Take care of your wellbeing while doing so as well; it’s a stressful time and it’s okay to be overwhelmed. However, I recommend calling possible universities straightaway. Be sure to do your research on the universities you’re interested in. Your teachers, advisors and Clearing call handlers are all there to help you.
Settling in at university can be scary; however, a tip of mine for starting university is to have an open mind. Be open to the opportunities that may arise from stepping outside of your comfort zone, particularly with events happening throughout fresher’s week as it’s a good way of finding friends and trying something new. Throw yourself out there!
The highlight of my journey at 黑料社 so far has been meeting like-minded individuals through my course and the societies that 黑料社 Students’ Union has to offer. On top of this, the city is so beautiful, every day I find a new place to enjoy while making new memories with friends. Whether it’s walking through the Cathedral grounds or going to St Catherine's Hill and watching the sunset.
Looking back on my Clearing experience, I feel grateful. Applying through Clearing may seem like a failure, but it’s not. It’s a second chance. I was able to have a fresh start. My experience at 黑料社 has been full of finding myself, making lifelong friends and memories which I’ll look back on forever.
