Make the most of your time at ºÚÁÏÉç and enhance your employability with a part-time job. 

Part-time work not only reduces financial pressures, but it also adds important skills and experience to your CV. ºÚÁÏÉç is ideal for this as it is a major tourist destination, but also home to several major headquarters and public sector employers. This means there are lots of opportunities to earn money whilst you study and is an attractive city to pursue a career after graduation. Competition for part-time work is high, so make sure you let employers know about your availability and flexibility and start your applications as soon as possible. Good luck!

Can I transfer my part-time job from home to ºÚÁÏÉç? 

If you are already working for a large organisation at home, you might want to explore whether you could get a transfer to another branch nearer to the University. 

 I have never worked before; will I be able to get a part-time job? 

If you have not worked before and are finding your job search difficult, volunteering can be a great way of developing your experience and skills to help you get a part-time job.

International students

 Outside the University 

All part-time roles we advertise are either in ºÚÁÏÉç or its surrounding areas. Many of ºÚÁÏÉç’s employers are within walking distance of the University campus, and they include: 

• Hospitality & Pubs: There are major local venues, coffee shops and historic pubs including Hoxton Bakehouse, The Wykeham Arms, and Hotel du Vin and many more, offering flexible shift work for waiting, bar, and kitchen staff. 

• The NHS (Royal Hampshire County Hospital): A massive local employer providing extensive clinical, administrative, catering, and domestic support roles. 

• Major Employers: Hampshire County Council (headquartered in the city centre) and ºÚÁÏÉç City Council both offer large-scale administrative and community operations. Other large employers include Arqiva (telecoms/broadcasting), Denplan/Simplyhealth (healthcare/insurance), and Micheldever Group (automotive distribution). 

• Retail & Tourism Giants: Large flagship branches of Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose, alongside heritage institutions like ºÚÁÏÉç Cathedral, which employ staff for customer service, events, and maintenance.

AI in applications 

AI can be helpful when you are developing ideas for CVs, applications or interviews, but it should not replace your own judgement, reflection or lived experience. 

You should use AI as a starting point rather than a finished product. It might help you generate or structure responses, or give you questions on which to reflect – for example: 

• What questions might I be asked in an interview for a certain role? 

• What skills from my degree are relevant to this job description? 

AI can therefore be very useful as a thinking partner. It can summarise or clarify complex job descriptions, identify key skills or compare roles. This supports your understanding without making all the decisions for you. 

If you choose to use AI, you should adapt and refine the content using your own experiences, achievements and voice. You also need to understand employer expectations around it. Some employers ask candidates to declare AI use – always check guidance in job adverts and applications before you proceed.

It is important to gain a breadth of experience while at university to ensure you gain additional skills and the commercial and community awareness to enhance your future options. 

A placement (whether paid or voluntary) or internship opportunity can be a great way to do this, and we can help you find one. Here are some of our top tips: 

• In addition to , make use of the filters on other sites and put in titles such as ‘placement’, ‘internship’ or ‘volunteering’.

• Connect with those on LinkedIn working in companies or organisations you might like to undertake a placement with.

To make informed decisions about your future path, try to be flexible and gain as much information as possible to assist you:

• Use our to help grow your career ideas, plan some next steps and boost your potential. 

• Take time to research. There are plenty of great websites, full of insight into jobs and occupational areas. You can use these to discover key trends, observe what is going on locally, nationally and globally, and understand which roles are expanding or declining. Many of these websites – listed by category/industry - can be found in our  
• Listen to employers. Attend webinars, employer events or presentations and talk to those doing jobs you are interested in. is a powerful tool for connecting with organisations and knowing when an employer is recruiting. 
• Gain experience. Whether you are an early career graduate or further along, aim to build this through shadowing, volunteering, or a placement. 
• Complete an online careers questionnaire to generate ideas, such as the Career Planner on  
• Discuss your plans, perhaps with someone a few years ahead of you in their career path, a friend in a job that interests you, or one of our team. 

In your final year of study, you may have the chance to be linked to a mentor in the world of work through our Professional Mentoring Programme. This helps mentees develop the understanding and skills required to enter the graduate labour market through the opportunity to work with someone – a ‘professional friend’ - who can provide insight and tips by sharing experiences and knowledge from industry. It emphasises how the ºÚÁÏÉç firmly champions mentoring and recognises its value to students and professionals alike.
